Join Carl Raymond, host of The Gilded Gentleman history podcast, for this unique and wide-ranging look at art inside The Met Museum that was created during America’s famous Gilded Age. Carl will guide you through the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and weave together a story of the styles, the artists, the architects, the sculptors and the painters that gave the Gilded Age its look.
This tour will combine masterpieces of the period with some of the biggest names together with lesser-known yet essential works by nearly forgotten artists. Artists discussed will include Louis Comfort Tiffany, John LaFarge, Augustus Saint-Gaudens Thomas Cole, Eastman Johnson, Mary Cassatt, Frederick Remington, Winslow Homer, James McNeil Whistler, and Childe Hassam among others.
You’ll come away with a clear understanding of how artists responded to one of the most important periods in American history and gave it its opulence and style.
The Art of the Gilded Age at the Met Museum tour highlights:
- An in-depth discussion and understanding of the work and genius of Louis Comfort Tiffany
- A chance to view furniture and decorative pieces that once belonged to the Vanderbilt family
- Understand how paintings, decorative arts and furniture worked together by viewing the Period Rooms

The Tour
The tour lasts approximately two hours and takes place inside The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The tour will meet in the Group Meeting Area inside the street-level entrance to the museum at 81st Street and Fifth Avenue.
Rates
Walking Tour:
Regular Price: $90 (includes $28 admission to the museum)
Senior Price (65+): $80 (includes $20 admission to the museum)
Student Price: $70 (includes $12 admission to the museum)
Note about Met Members and NYC residents: The Met’s official policy is that anyone taking a tour with a guide has to pay the group price admission fee. There is no distinction between New York citizens, donors, members, etc. “Membership benefits and other passes are not valid for group admission.”
Also, because of the mandatory Met tickets, no promo or discount codes can be used for this special tour.
